The Argentine has scored 11 times in 17 outings but usually he would average around a goal a game.
Barcelona though have struggled this season despite their league position and Messi's uncertain future continues to be a major issue.

The Catalan club are due to have presidential elections later this month.
Whoever is voted into power may have a big say on whether the 33-year-old stays or goes.
Joan Laporta was in charge during the Pep Guardiola glory days and is again targeting the top position.
He is confident that Messi can be convinced to remain at the Nou Camp.
"They are two things that are the result of poor management. The situation has worsened with Covid, but mismanagement is part of and is the origin of this consequence; having Leo like this," Laporta told AS .
"The two things are reversible. The situation of the club is reversible and the Leo issue, I hope too.
The club's financial situation will dictate the scenario to some degree with potential candidates stating that Messi may have to be sold.
Emili Rousaud believes that the forward's salary is unsustainable but believes he may still stay.
"He did not want to leave the club for economic reasons. It was down to the lack of a sports project," he told Sport .
"I will look him in the eyes and say: 'Your salary is unsustainable, the club cannot pay you. But we are going to launch a project to surround you with young talent.'"
