Lionel Messi scores stunning free-kick for Argentina as Copa America pays tribute to Diego Maradona

Lionel Messi scored a stunning free-kick as Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw by Chile in their opening Copa America clash.

Prior to the match, a brilliant tribute was paid to Argentine legend Diego Maradona, who passed away last November.

Barcelona superstar Messi put his side ahead just after the half-hour mark with a quite sensational effort, curling the ball over Claudio Bravo and into the top corner.

Argentina enjoyed the best of the match, but were made to pay for failing to extend their lead when VAR judged Arturo Vidal had been brought down unfairly inside the penalty area.

The Inter Milan midfielder missed his spot kick, but former QPR loanee Eduardo Vargas was quick to react, heading home to claim a point for Chile in Group A.

Messi was extremely unhappy at full time and shared several words with the officials after the game.

The 34-year-old is still chasing his first international trophy, and will hope to get their campaign firmly on track against Uruguay on Friday.

Ahead of Monday night's game, Argentina and the Copa America paid a heartwarming tribute to Maradona.

The footballing legend, who was 60 when he passed away eight months ago, led his country to World Cup glory in 1986.

The Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos was lit up with a spectacular lights show before kick off.

And several of Maradona's best moments were projected onto the pitch, while a hologram recreated the former Napoli and Barcelona man juggling the ball.

The official Copa America Twitter page posted the video of the display with the caption: 'THANKS DIEGO! Emotional tribute to the star Diego Armando Maradona in CONMEBOL #CopaAmérica, eternal 10!'

After Maradona's death in November, Messi took to Instagram to pay his respects to his fellow countryman.

"A very sad day for all Argentines and for football. He's left us but he hasn't gone, because Diego is eternal," he wrote alongside pictures of the two of them together.

"I'll keep all the great times I enjoyed with him and want to take the opportunity to send my deepest respects to all his family and friends. RIP."
