Lionel Messi saga could take surprise twist as Liverpool watch on

The saga surrounding Lionel Messi’s future continues to dominate the headlines, and Liverpool will be watching on from the sidelines.

It was announced last week that the Argentine forward would not be signing a new contract with the La Liga giants after his previous deal expired at the end of June.

La Liga rejected the contract proposal drawn up by the two parties, leaving Messi as a free agent to find a new club.

One of those is Paris Saint-Germain, who have been rumoured to be willing to let 10 players leave the club in order to finance a deal to sign Messi.

The likes of Manchester City and Chelsea have been tentatively linked with the 34-year-old, even though the finances involved make a deal almost impossible.

However, a fresh report has emerged claiming that Messi’s time at the Nou Camp may not be over after all.

According to Spanish news outlet La Porteria, Barca have made a fresh contract offer to Messi, which the two parties will negotiate Tuesday.

The report adds this will be the last proposal that Barca make to keep Messi, and that there is still a chance that their club legend will not depart this summer.

Messi held a press conference on Sunday where he expressed his desire to remain at Barcelona.

Liverpool look set to avoid the Argentine in the Champions League group stage this term, with both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain alongside them in pot two of the draw.

When asked if he had any regrets about his time at the Nou Camp, Messi referenced Liverpool’s famous win in the Champions League back in 2019.

“I would have liked to have tried to win another Champions League.

"We got knocked out in the semi-final against Liverpool, which stopped us getting to another final. We got to the semi-final against Chelsea with Pep [Guardiola] and they prevented us from getting to a final.

“There could have been a time where we won another Champions League, but that’s football."

Liverpool won the game at Anfield 4-0 to reach the final which they later won against Tottenham Hotspur to secure their sixth European Cup.
