Lionel Messi's reason for PSG absence and when he will make debut

Lionel Messi will not his Paris Saint-Germain debut on Saturday evening.

Maurcio Pochettino's side welcome Strasbourg in their second Ligue 1 fixture of the season.

PSG battled hard to claim 2-1 win at Troyes last weekend before their capture of Messi was confirmed on Tuesday.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner created a transfer announcement frenzy like no other, and despite training with his teammates this week, will have to wait for his bow.

Fellow new signings Achraf Hakimi, who scored in their league opener, and Georginio Wijnaldum are set to make their home debuts in the French capital as they look to continue their winning start.

Messi's lack of match fitness, having hardly trained since winning the Copa America on July 10, has been cited as the reason for his absence.

During his Friday pre-match press conference, Pochettino said: "Today was his second training session since the Copa America final.

"The priority for him is to feel better and better. Only then will we see if he is ready to play matches."

At his unveiling on Wednesday, Messi himself gave an update on his condition, saying: "I've been on holiday and haven't trained for a month.

"I would imagine I'll have to do an individual pre-season, train well and, when I'm ready, start playing."

So when could the 34-year-old first rock his team's No. 30 shirt?

Barring his expected presentation to supporters prior to the Strasbourg clash, the trip to Brest next Friday is set to be too soon for Messi to make.

More likely than that match is their game away at Reims on Ligue 1 on Sunday, August 29 or when the Parisians welcome Clermont on Sunday, September 12 following the international break.

That means, hypothetically, he could feature for Argentina again before he makes his long-awaited PSG bow.

Although Lille hold the Ligue 1 crown after a surprise title win and Pochettino will be desperate to reclaim it for his club, Messi's incoming, like that of fellow new and experienced face Sergio Ramos, is to help PSG lift the elusive Champions League.

He added while speaking at his unwilling: "They've [PSG] been so close to a victory in the Champions League but couldn't make it.

"But they were close. In this competition the best teams are playing and it's difficult to win it.

He added: "In the Champions League not always the best team wins.

"It's a special competition and that's why it's so beautiful and important.

"They all want to win. We all want to win this competition.

"My goal and my dream is to win this trophy again and I think that Paris is the best place to have a chance to win it again."
