Lionel Messi's PSG move could spark transfer mayhem involving Kylian Mbappe and Mo Salah

Lionel Messi continues to be linked with a summer move to Paris Saint-Germain as the Argentinean's future remains very much up in the air.

The Barcelona star stunned the world of football by demanding a transfer away from the club last year - something which ultimately did not materialise.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, however, he looks almost certain to move on - especially after leaked details of his mammoth contract demonstrated that Barcelona would struggle to afford to keep him.

PSG continue to look the most likely option, with the French giants one of the only clubs in world football who would be just about able to pay Messi's eye-watering demands.

But according to Marca, if they were to sign the six-time Ballon d'Or winner it could lead to an almighty dominoes effect in the market.

Despite PSG's huge riches, it seems unlikely even they would be able to afford the wages of Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe together, while Financial Fair Play rules would also make the possibility of the three linking up highly unlikely.

And with Neymar seemingly set to extend his contract at Parc des Princes in the near future, that would leave Mbappe as the man they would be forced to sell to make a deal for Messi possible.

Real Madrid are the team who have been most strongly linked with Mbappe in seasons past, but given their own not-so-rosy financial situation, this may not be possible.

If they are unable to sign Mbappe, Marca claim they would turn their attentions towards Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, who is rumoured to be unhappy at Anfield.

The Egyptian forward would certainly prove a cheaper option than Mbappe, and is a player who is known to be highly admired in the Spanish capital.

If Messi does not go to PSG, meanwhile, one of the only other realistic options would be Manchester City.

And part of that deal could involve City legend Sergio Aguero, who is out of contract in the summer and may be seen a direct replacement for Messi at the Nou Camp.

There are so many parts in play that it could be one of the most complicated transfer sagas of all time, and after a relatively quiet January window we could well be in for a much more lively summer.
