Lionel Messi's Barcelona situation "positive" according to presidential candidate

Lionel Messi's situation at Barcelona was made worse by the Covid-19 pandemic and mismanagement at the Nou Camp according to presidential candidate Joan Laporta.

But he is confident that both things are "reversible" and is "positive" that the Argentine will remain in Spain.

Messi tried to leave the Catalan giants in the summer but opted against forcing through an exit and stayed put.

It was widely thought that he would seek pastures new this summer however with Manchester City heavily linked.

Laporta though is growing in confidence that the 33-year-old will remain a Barcelona player.

Messi's team have said they will consider the club's latest offer once a new president has been installed.

"They are two things that are the result of poor management. The situation has worsened with Covid, but mismanagement is part of and is the origin of this consequence; having Leo like this," Laporta told AS .

"The two things are reversible. The situation of the club is reversible and the Leo issue, I hope too.

"I think the most important thing is that Leo said he will wait for a new president to decide and, therefore, he would be willing to listen to Barca's proposal.

"They told me they would wait until the end of the season. I like to stay with the positive and I think that is very positive."

Barcelona have struggled this season under Ronald Koeman, who was appointed in the summer.

They are considerably off the pace in La Liga but Messi has come out recently and seemed to underline his commitment to the club who he is determined to make a success again.

He said: “I had a bad time because of the end of the season & because of what happened in the summer, but now I feel good, eager, excited.

"I know the club is going through a difficult moment, but I am excited and wanting to fight.”
