Lionel Messi reveals son taunts him over Barcelona defeat to Liverpool

Lionel Messi has revealed that his son taunts him by declaring "I'm Liverpool " whenever the pair play football together.

The Barcelona captain suffered defeat at the hands of the Reds in the semi-finals of this year's Champions League, a competition the Premier League side went on to win with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in the final.

Messi scored twice against Jurgen Klopp's side in the first leg at the Camp Nou, including a stunning free-kick, as the La Liga champions took a commanding 3-0 lead into the return match at Anfield.

However, the Spanish giants weren't able to make the most of that advantage as Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum scored two goals apiece to give Liverpool a 4-0 win on the night and a 4-3 win on aggregate.

Messi has previously made no secret of how painful that loss was, but it appears that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner gets little sympathy at home.

The 31-year-old, who has three sons, revealed how his middle boy Mateo (born in 2015) uses Klopp's side to taunt his father when they play together.

“We played at home, and last time we kicked it about, he would tell me, ‘I’m Liverpool, who beat you'," Messi told TyCSports , via The Liverpool Echo .

"'You are Barca, and I’m Liverpool.’”

Since making his Barcelona first team debut in 2004, Messi has established himself as one of the club's best-ever players.

In 687 appearances for the Spanish giants, the Argentine forward has scored 603 goals and has brought a number of trophies to the Camp Nou, including ten league titles, six Copa del Reys and four Champions League crowns.

But rather than just follow his father's team, Messi also admitted that Mateo has been known to cheer for rivals Real Madrid in an attempt to annoy older brother Thiago.

“He’s watching TV and he screams goal for Real Madrid," the Argentina captain added.

“He does it on purpose against his brother.

"Everyone watching Madrid, they score, Thiago gets angry, and Mateo goes ‘goaaaal for Madrid!’”
