Lionel Messi reveals lessons learned from Barcelona's thrashing at Liverpool

Lionel Messi admits Barcelona's biggest mistake against Liverpool was not scoring an away goal.

The Spanish champions were dumped out by Liverpool in the semi-final of the Champions League after a 4-0 defeat at Anfield.

Barca had won the first leg 3-0 but had no answer as Jurgen Klopp's men ran riot on home soil on their way to becoming European champions.

The shock defeat continued Messi's wait for a fifth Champions League success and he hopes Barca have learned their lesson this season - particularly if they come up against another Premier League side.

"The English stadiums help their teams a lot," he told SPORT.

"One bad performance, even if you have a lead, could see you be eliminated.

"It’s so important to score goals away from home if you are going to win the Champions League.

"When we won the Champions League, this was the case too. If I remember correctly, we scored in every away match.

"On top of everything else we did well, we always scored goals. If you don’t score away from home, it makes life difficult for you."

Barcelona have been drawn with Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Slavia Prague in a potentially difficult group.

But Messi hopes he can add to his silverware tally in the current campaign, with Barca also defending their La Liga crown.

"Obviously I want to win. And I want to win at this club. It is my home. I have no intention of going anywhere but I want to keep winning and competing," he added.

"What I can say is that I want to be at Barcelona for as long as possible and play my whole career here because this is my home."
