Lionel Messi left out of Barcelona Champions League match for second successive week

Lionel Messi has been left out of Barcelona's Champions League squad for the second time in a week.

The Argentine was rested by boss Ronald Koeman as the Catalans travelled across Europe to take on Dynamo Kiev last Tuesday.

And the Dutchman has again opted to leave Messi out as they visit Champions League minnows Ferencvaros.

Barcelona are already through to the knockout stages of the competition and the decision was made last week to hand the 33-year-old a rest.

Koeman has again chosen to leave Messi out of Barcelona's trip to Budapest along with Philippe Coutinho and goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

The Barcelona boss has bemoaned the current schedule and claimed it is "impossible" to keep players fit in the current climate when questioned last week.

“Sometimes you need to protect the players because the game calendar is incredible,” Koeman said last week.

Messi scored his side's fourth upon his return to the team at the weekend as they comfortably saw off Osasuna at the Nou Camp.

He paid tribute to compatriot Diego Maradona as he produced a Newell's Old Boys shirt bearing the legend's name after scoring.

Despite Barcelona's safe passage through in Europe they have endured plenty of struggles already this term.

They battled a summer of uncertainty as Messi expressed a desire to leave before opting to stay for another year.

Speculation persists that he will quit the Spanish side in the summer despite club president Josep Maria Bartomeu resigning.

The Catalans sit seventh in La Liga having lost three of their opening nine games.

In the Champions League they have won four out of four however which includes a 2-0 success at Juventus.

The Italians will visit to the Nou Camp in Group G's final round of fixtures.
