Lionel Messi left bloodied after heavy clash with Manchester United's Chris Smalling

Lionel Messi was left battered and bloodied following a heavy collision with Chris Smalling.

The Manchester United defender clattered into the Barcelona icon during the first half of the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Old Trafford.

Smalling caught the Argentine with his shoulder as he hurtled past him to contest a high ball, reports The Mirror.

In a second contact, the defender's arm caught Messi's face and knocked him to the ground.

The Barca star spent time on the deck as medics looked to stem the blood flow from his nose.

But he was eventually patched up and sent back into the fray as the Catalans lead 1-0.

It doesn't appear that Messi has suffered any serious damage, despite the gruesome nature of the injury.

Messi had earlier played a key role in Barcelona's opening goal - despite an initial bad touch.

Messi ran onto an Arthur pass and would have been clean through on goal had he got it right.

But, he more than made amends by flipping an excellent cross onto the head of Luis Suarez, who nodded back and the ball found the net, via the chest of Luke Shaw.

The effort had been initially ruled out for offside, only for a VAR review to confirm that Suarez had been onside from Messi's cross.
