Lionel Messi debut: PSG fans told they will have to wait to see new star in action

Paris Saint-Germain fans will have to wait a little longer to see Lionel Messi make his debut.

The world's greatest player was on Wednesday presented to the media by PSG after Barcelona were unable to register him for the new season.

Messi has joined on a two-year deal, with the option of a further year, worth around €35million per season.

PSG unveiled Messi on Wednesday morning but will not be on show again for a few more weeks.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side host Strasbourg in their second Ligue 1 fixture of the new season on Saturday but, according to Sky Sports News, Messi will not be ready to play after having a month off following Argentina’s Copa America win.

PSG travel to Brest on the evening of August 20, but that is even expected to come too soon as the player looks to complete a “pre-season”. Instead, the away trip to Reims away on August 29 is expected to be Messi’s first appearance.

Asked about his debut on Wednesday, Messi said: "I was on holidays and it’s very new. I spoke yesterday with the technical staff, so, maybe I need a pre-season.

“I’m going to begin to train and work and I hope I can play as soon as I can, when the staff thinks I’m OK, I’ll be ready.”
