Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil van Dijk are Fifa The Best men's player finalists

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil van Dijk have been named finalists for Fifa The Best men's player in 2019.

The shortlist of 10 was whittled down to three on Monday as Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Kylain Mbappe, Matthijs de Light, Frenkie de Jong and Eden Hazard missed out.

Luka Modric, who won the award last year after leading Croatia to the World Cup final, did not make the 10-man shortlist.

The same three players were nominated for Uefa's Player of the Year award last week, with the Liverpool defender coming out on top.

The announcement of the final three in each category — including best men's and women's coach — was made Monday at the San Siro. The winners will be announced in Milan on September 23.

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp is competing with Tottenham's Mauricio Pochettino and Manchester City's Pep Guardiola for best men's coach. Phil Neville of England was shortlisted with USA's Jill Ellis and Sarina Wiegman of Netherlands for women's coach.

England forward Lucy Bronze is competing with USA pair Megan Rapinoe World Cup-winning team-mate Alex Morgan.
