Lionel Messi could be forced to miss Barcelona's La Liga return next weekend

Lionel Messi is set to undergo a scan amid fears that he could miss the return of La Liga next weekend.

There are fears that the Barcelona icon could have suffered a microtear to his right leg, with TV3 in Spain, via AS, reporting that the issue could be more serious than first thought.

Barcelona had initially claimed that Messi was absent from Wednesday's training session as a precaution, but it is thought that the issue could be more serious than that ahead of Barca's return to action at Mallorca next weekend.

Barca will then face a run of 11 matches in five weeks as the La Liga season comes to a close, with Quique Setien's side currently sitting top of the table by two points from rivals Real Madrid.

Former Real winger and La Liga ambassador Steve McManaman thinks that injuries will be commonplace when the season gets back up and running again, with La Liga's first match back seeing Sevilla take on Real Betis next Thursday.

"I think the fact that everyone is having a pre-season now, everybody is trying to get fit and up to speed," said McManaman.

"I think these games are going come thick and fast, so probably the teams with the best quality and the biggest squads will probably rise to the fore.

"We know that the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico and Sevilla have got the better teams, but I think people will get injured because of the tight schedule.

"But this break that we've had now, two-and-a-half months, will enable a lot of the players who were injured before to get back fit, so it will have helped a number of teams too."
