Lionel Messi: Cirque du Soleil show based on Barcelona star's illustrious career to host premiere

The Cirque du Soleil show based on the career of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi premieres in the Catalan capital on Thursday night.

'Messi10' has been in its creative process for the past two years and will run for a month at the Forum theatre in Barcelona, before travelling to Argentina next summer.

Described as "a euphoric 90-minute thrill ride that combines breathtaking physical performance with unthinkable poetic wonder," the event has captured significant interest in Barcelona and is sold out for its opening night.

Messi, meanwhile, has only seen select parts of the show so far after turning down invitations to travel to Montreal during the creative process and also choosing not to attend auditions in Barcelona.

"It's impressive," he said in an interview with RAC1 this week.

"It was very weird when it all started, when they said they wanted to do this. For me it's incredible, because it's not normal for someone who is still so present to be an inspiration.

"It's usually done as homage to people who are no longer with us. It was very difficult to mix football and circus and the fact that they were inspired by me was surprising so it was a very nice feeling."

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner will be present along with his family for the premiere on Thursday.

Tickets for the show are available on the official website, with prices starting at around €29.
