Lionel Messi 'brought his A-game' - Jesse Lingard rues Man Utd errors vs Barcelona

Jesse Lingard and Manchester United were left to rue costly errors as Lionel Messi punished the Red Devils to seal an impressive Champions League victory.

Messi delivered another reminder of his enduring star quality as Barcelona quashed United's hopes of another improbable quarter-final comeback at the Nou Camp.

United had overcome a two-goal deficit at PSG last month but Messi's first-half brace and a wonder strike from Philippe Coutinho ushered Barcelona towards a 3-0 victory, 4-0 on aggregate, at the ground of one of the Premier League side's greatest triumphs.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was insistent that the 1999 Champions League final win over Bayern Munich would have no bearing on this quarter-final second leg and his remarks proved accurate.

Lingard told BT Sport after the game: "You can't make errors in these games. We dominated for the first 15 minutes, we had chances and the game could have been different.

"Lionel Messi brought his A-game tonight, he's one of the best in the world. All we can do is move on, it's a big week ahead.

"We were always underdogs but we had to back ourselves and believe. Chances in these big games are massive."
