Lionel Messi: Barcelona confirm thigh injury with no return date set

Lionel Messi has an adductor injury in his left leg, Barcelona confirmed on Wednesday.

The Argentine attacker made his first start of the season in Barca’s 2-1 win at home to Villarreal on Tuesday night after a calf injury suffered in pre-season, but he went down holding his thigh just after the half-hour mark and did not reappear for the second half.

Coach Ernesto Valverde said after the match that he had substituted the 32-year-old “as a precaution”, but tests on Wednesday have revealed an injury.

“First team player Leo Messi has elongated his left adductor. He is out and his recovery will determine his availability,” a short statement on Barca’s website read.

No time frame has been given for his recovery, but the club captain is expected to miss Saturday’s trip to Getafe in La Liga.

He is also likely to be doubtful for the Champions League clash at home to Inter Milan next Wednesday.
