Lionel Messi arrives at Barcelona for first time since handing in transfer request

Lionel Messi returned to training with his Barcelona team-mates for the first time since handing in a transfer request.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner has grown disillusioned with life at the Camp Nou, culminating in him attempting to leave the club on a free.

His father and agent Jorge was locked in a legal battle on Messi's behalf in a bid to get the forward released from his contract.

But Barcelona and La Liga rejected a claim that Messi's buyout clause had expired, forcing the Argentine to concede he'd be staying in Spain for at least one more season.

Messi hasn't been training with his Barcelona team-mates in recent weeks, but was pictured arriving on Monday for the first attempting to force an exit.

Barcelona are in the process of transition, with new boss Ronald Koeman under much pressure to turn things around in the coming season.

The former Holland manager is keen to strengthen his ranks, and has been strongly linked with a move for Memphis Depay.

Koeman worked alongside Depay at international level, and is hoping the former Man United forward can hit the ground running and spearhead success at the Camp Nou.

Meanwhile, long-term Barcelona striker Luis Suarez looks certain to leave the La Liga club this month, with Serie A side Juventus his likely destination.
