Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann partnership hailed after Barcelona win over Borussia Dortmund

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde remains confident Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann will eventually form a good understanding after the pair both netted in a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund .

The two forwards, along with fellow striker Luis Suarez , were on target for the La Liga outfit as they secured safe passage through to the knockout stages of the Champions League .

Griezmann was only handed his chance in the match after Ousmane Dembele suffered an injury midway through the first half, with the former Atletico Madrid man coming onto the pitch in the 25th minute.

The World Cup winner has yet to find his best form since arriving at the Camp Nou and earlier in the season admitted it was 'difficult to connect' with Messi.

The pair, though, linked up well together against Dortmund and Valverde has faith that there is plenty more to come from the duo in the coming months.

“They have spent many hours together, they understand each other well,” Valverde told reporters after the game.

“They know where they have to be unmarked and when to pass, they coincide their play and they get it right because they are also very talented.

“Messi is an extraordinary passer, he knows when to time the ball and with Griezmann they can understand well because he makes very good runs and they complement each other."

Victory for Barcelona saw them reach the knockout stages of Europe's premier club competition and also wrap up top spot in Group F.

It means the Spanish giants can enjoy something of a free hit when they head for Inter Milan and the San Siro on the final matchday on December 10.

However, there is still plenty on the line for the Italians who are second, but level on points with Dortmund who entertain Czech side Slavia Prague.
