Lionel Messi agrees Paris Saint-Germain move to hand Liverpool transfer boost

Lionel Messi is to join Paris-Saint Germain on a free transfer after leaving Barcelona.

The Argentine forward's shock exit from the Camp Nou was announced on Thursday after the club failed in their bid to offer him a new contract due to financial problems.

French giants PSG moved quickly to secure Messi's signature, opening talks late on Thursday before wrapping up the deal today. Messi will sign a two-year deal.

He becomes their fourth high profile free transfer of the summer, after Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum.

There had been legitimate fears that Messi would join up with his former manager Pep Guardiola at Man City, meaning a player many consider the greatest of all time would line up for Liverpool's Premier League rivals in the season ahead.

But PSG moved quickest to secure Messi and will now hope to win the Champions League for the first time in 2021/22.
