Former Rangers No 1 Lionel Charbonnier has joined the chorus of approval of the Ibrox club's superb start to the season.
The Frenchman, part of Dick Advocaat 's treble-winning Gers squad in 1998/99, spent three years at Ibrox and is delighted at the resurgence in the club's resurgence under Steven Gerrard.
Charbonnier, now 54 and a pundit on French TV, believes Rangers ' unbeaten run is down to Gerrard building strong foundations at the back - particularly domestically, where only Hibs and Motherwell have scored against them.
He said: "It starts there. When you want to progress, you have to rely on a very good defence.
"When you want to build a house from the ground up, and you want it to be beautiful and to last, you always need a good foundation.
"This team has a good defensive foundation. This is where we build good attacks from."
Charnbonnier, speaking to So Foot.com, admitted he was less than convinced that appointing a rookie manager - as Steven Gerrard was when he arrived - was a good idea, with Rangers in the doldrums at that point in May 2018.
But the former French international, part of his nation's World Cup winning squad just prior to joining Rangers in 1998, admits he has been won over completely.
He added: "At first, Steven Gerrard, I was like, 'Hmm, this could be complicated.'
"And then we gave him time. This is a very cohesive team. He really put his foot down, and he speaks very well.
"The team is consistent but not only that, it's consistently getting better. He's the right person, in the right place, at the right time."
