Linwood pensioner rescued from burning home after gas fire sparks blaze

A pensioner had to be rescued from his burning home after a blaze sparked by a gas fire.

73-year-old Hugh Law was pulled from his house on Hart Street, Linwood, after fast-thinking neighbours raised the alarm on Sunday night.

The OAP accidentally knocked his gas fire over while sitting in the living room and the floorboards quickly caught fire around him.

His worried neighbour of more than 25 years, who asked not to be identified, told the Paisley Daily Express she doesn’t know what would have happened to Mr Law if her and her son not been around.

Her son heard the alarm and they quickly alerted the emergency services around 9.30pm on Sunday.

She told the Express: “I was sitting watching TV and my son came downstairs and asked if I could hear something.

“I said, ‘I think it’s just the TV’, but when I turned it off, sure enough, there was the alarm.

“It was awful.

“We called the fire service and they were there quickly.

“I looked in but couldn’t see anything.”

“I don’t know what would have happened had we not heard the alarm. I don’t want to think about it.”

She added: “They managed to get him out and onto the grass outside.

“A doctor who lives across the road came over and was with him until the paramedics arrived.

“He has burns to his back and legs. We just hope he is going to be OK.”

Mr Law was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Paisley, where he is being treated for his injuries.

Wreckage from the blaze was left strewn across his garden yesterday as a firefighter handed out fire safety leaflets to people in the area.

It is understood there are no suspicious circumstances in relation to the blaze.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were alerted at 9.42pm on Sunday to reports of a house fire at Hart Street, Linwood.

“Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances to the scene and firefighters assisted in the removal of a man from the building and transferred him into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews extinguished the fire and left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
