A determined Paisley Boys’ Brigade kid is cracking codes and covering miles in honour of veterans and their families.
Linwood youngster Matthew McDonald is taking on Operation Bletchley this month, a virtual fundraising walking challenge set up to raise cash for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.
The 11-year-old initially signed up for the 50-mile challenge, but after completing the distance in just eight days he then set out to tackle the extended 100 mile task as well.
As a result he is now targeting his 150th mile in July, having broken 22 tricky codes along the way.
To make up his miles in time, Matthew has been volunteering for community organisation Toddle Tots who created and look after the Linwood Fairy Trail.
The proud member of the 15th Paisley Boys’ Brigade and Linwood Parish Church Sunday School, has been checking the fairy trail a few times a week and replacing any vandalised items with new ones he’s created.
He has also hand delivered prizes to local kids who have participated in the trail.
In addition, he and six-year-old sister Ivy have been clearing the path along the way, litter picking as part of Renfrewshire’s Team Up to Clean Up initiative.

Matthew told the Express: “I’m inspired by the work of The Soldiers’ Charity and wanted to support them by raising money during Operation Bletchley.
“I really enjoy doing the walks and I like that after each five or 10 miles I complete I get a fun code to crack. Some of the codes are really challenging but I always have fun solving them.
“This year I’m even more determined to reach my goals. I managed 50 miles last year but this year I’m going to reach 150.
“It’s also been good to be able to focus on walking and on this challenge during lockdown while I’ve not been able to go to my Boys Brigade, church and other clubs or do the things I normally would.”
ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is the national charity of the British Army, providing lifelong support to soldiers, veterans and their immediate families when they are in need.
Matthew completed his first ever 5k run over the weekend to help boost his miles total, and is determined to reach the 150 mile target ahead of schedule.

So far the youngster has raised more than £160, but he is hoping to hit his £250 target by getting a few more donations before the end of the month.
