Linlithgow Rose boss calls for 'clarity' with East of Scotland League season on course for October 10 start

Linlithgow Rose boss Brown Ferguson says there needs to be clarity regarding the rules should a player test positive for Covid-19.

The Prestonfield gaffer has been left bemused by the lack of consistency within the game as the East of Scotland season prepares to start behind closed doors on October 10.

SPFL League Two outfit Annan Athletic were able to continue with an arranged friendly despite multiple positives tests within their squad - however Lowland League side East Stirling saw their clash with Bathgate Thistle postponed due to a single positive.

Of more concern for Ferguson, though, was the fact that all East Stirling players and staff were made to self-isolate for 14 days as a result.

Should East of Scotland sides be forced to take similar action, the former Stenhousemuir boss says there's 'no way' the season can go ahead.

Speaking to the Courier, he commented: "We’re in a very serious position and what we need is clarity.

“At this moment in time, the league is starting on October 10, a week on Saturday, and we don’t know what the rules are.

"Annan had multiple positives and were able to play. East Stirling had one player test positive and the entire squad, staff and their families had to self-isolate.

“Is that what’s going to happen going forward when one player tests positive? If so, there is absolutely no point in starting the league because there is no way the season will be played to a finish. It’s not going to happen."

He added: "If you’re asking everyone - players, staff, volunteers, and their families as well - to self-isolate for two weeks then some of them aren’t going to be able to work so it’s not worth the risk.

“The financial impact would be severe and unnecessary if that is what the rules are going to be going forward.

“If it’s a case of that one person self-isolating then I think most would accept that as a logical way of doing things."

The Rose are set to open their campaign next Saturday with a home clash against Crossgates Primrose.

With fans set to be locked out, Ferguson says he's staggered that the governing body isn't more vocal in asking for financial assistance from the government.

He commented: "We have a severe problem in Scottish football and that is that nobody within the governance of the game has been shouting from the rooftops and saying what we, as clubs and an industry, needs to survive. I’m not aware of one instance where that has happened, but you get it in every other industry.

“It absolutely beggars belief."
