Linfield youngster Josh Roney signs for Stoke City

Stoke City have announced the singing of talented young defender Josh Roney.

The centre-back joins after a successful spell with Linfield Swifts.

Roney has been training regularly with David Healy's first team squad.

He progressed through the Club NI Academy and represented Northern Ireland at various youth team levels.

Football trainer and former Irish League star Wesley Boyle wished the defender well on social media.

He said: "Congratulations Josh signing for Stoke City, keep working hard and good luck at your new club."

It is understood he will initially join up with Richard Walker's Stoke City Under-18s squad.

Josh's former school has also heaped praise on him after the move was announced.

Last night (June 28) Tandragee Junior High School said in a social media post: "We were just delighted to hear that past pupil Josh Roney has signed for Stoke City!

"We wish you the best of luck Josh and will be following your football career with great interest at TJHS."

Roney previously played for Portadown, where current Stoke first team manager and ex-Northern Ireland manager, Michael O'Neill, played during the early stages of his career.

His departure comes as David Healy welcomed another young talent - Andrew Clarke - to Linfield after he left Crusaders.

The Blues have had a busy transfer period so far with the most noteworthy signing being Chris Shields from Dundalk.
