Linfield vs Dundalk: How both managers are approaching the Unite the Union Champions Cup

Linfield and Dundalk will go head-to-head for the Unite the Union Champions Cup over the next week.

The two sides will meet at Windsor Park on Friday night (November 8) and again at Oriel Park three days later.

Dundalk finished their domestic season with Sunday's FAI Cup final penalty shootout defeat to Shamrock Rovers, while Linfield are in the early throes of a tense Danske Bank Premiership title defence.

So what does it mean to the two managers?

Dundalk boss Vinny Perth believes the Champions Cup clash is just the tonic to raise his players' spirits after the Lilywhites missed out on FAI Cup glory.

The League of Ireland champions were back on the training ground yesterday, preparing for Friday’s first leg in Belfast.

Perth said: “If we had won on Sunday we would be treating these two games with the utmost respect as well. I know the All-Island League got a setback last week but hopefully it’s a good game and a good occasion.

“On the pitch I think we’ve made strides in Irish football and the League of Ireland and now we’re preparing for what’s potentially another big weekend.”

Linfield's league schedule has been disrupted by their Champions Cup commitments.

The Blues were due to play Dungannon Swifts in the league this weekend, but that game has been postponed.

Healy's side are already playing catch-up in the Premiership following their impressive run in Europe.

And the former Northern Ireland striker believes the Champions Cup should have been played as a one-off final.

"The federations have decided that they want it over two legs, which is surprising," said Healy.

"Personally I think it should be over one game."

He added: "The Friday and the Monday creates a bit of an issue where we miss the game next Saturday which we should be playing against Dungannon.

"Then on the following Tuesday it also takes away the opportunity that we could catch up on a league game.

"We'll deal with it next week, there will be numerous changes and two or three of injured players will hopefully be available for the two games.

"We can't keep going on playing the same players week in, week out, so we'll need to change it next week."
