Linfield vs Borac Banja Luka: David Healy hoping 'cooling break' rule is used during Euro tie

David Healy hopes Linfield are not caught out by Northern Ireland's heatwave when they return to European action on Thursday night.

The Blues take on Bosnian outfit Borac Banja Luka in the second qualifying round of the Europa Conference League.

The opening leg is at Windsor Park, with conditions expected to be warm and uncompromising when the game kicks off at 7.45pm.

Northern Ireland has been basking in glorious sunshine and high temperatures over the past week - conditions that may suit Linfield's opponents more than the hosts.

Healy hopes UEFA's 'cooling breaks' are used in the game, after admitting his side got caught out during their Champions League defeat to Zalgiris Vilnius in Lithuania earlier this month.

"The weather is a new challenge. With the heat it is always a challenge," he told Linfield's website.

"Whether it be Qarabag or Rosenborg, or Montenegro, there has always been the water breaks.

"It is something I was unaware of until we were in Lithuania last week, and I thought it was extremely hot when we played there.

"It has to be a certain degree to get your water breaks. It was bordering on 25-26 degrees in Lithuania which wasn't enough.

"So hopefully tomorrow night the conditions will be fair for both sides. There probably will be water breaks, because again, the European rules state that."

Whether there will be any refreshments during the game remains to be seen, with UEFA rules stating that 'cooling breaks' are not permitted until the pitch-side temperature hits 32 degrees celsius.

If the temperature taken during both side's pre-match warm-ups is above 32, a 90-second break is permitted 25 minutes into each half.

The rule was used in a number of games during Euro 2020, but wasn't allowed in England's opening group game with Croatia despite temperatures rising to 28 degrees.
