Linfield squad returns to Belfast following Drita postponement

Linfield's squad returned home from Switzerland on Wednesday.

The Blues had spent six days in Nyon for the Champions League preliminary round tournament.

David Healy's side beat Tre Fiori in Saturday's semi-finals but their final against Drita was called off on Tuesday.

The game was postponed less than two hours before kick-off after two Drita players tested positive for Covid-19.

Drita have also returned home to Kosovo following Tuesday's postponement.

It appears likely that Linfield will now receive a bye into the next round where they will meet Legia Warsaw in Poland next week.

That tie will be played over one leg, with the winners at home to either Ararat of Armenia or Omonia Nicosia.

The losers will enter the draw for the second qualifying round of the Europa League.

Uefa are expected to confirm any decision on the preliminary round tie on Wednesday.

Updating fans on their website, Linfield confirmed they had arrived back in Belfast.

"The Linfield squad arrived at Belfast International airport by charter aircraft at 1pm today after several days in Switzerland," the club said.

"The Linfield party would like to place on record their appreciation to the staff at the Lake Geneva hotel in Versoix between Geneva and Nyon for all they did to make our stay so pleasant and comfortable.

"Similarly, appreciation is also extended to our coach driver Daphne who looked after the team’s transport requirements for the duration of the stay."
