Linfield lose out to Rosenborg in Champions League qualifier in Trondheim

Rosenborg eased to a comfortable 4-0 win against Linfield on Wednesday evening to progress in the Champions League.

Trailing 2-0 from last week's first leg in Belfast, David Healy's Blues put up a spirited display but were no match for the classy Norwegians in Trondheim.

A double from Anders Konradsen was added to by goals from David Akintola and Pål André Helland.

The hosts were ahead on 20 minutes when Konradsen headed home from a corner.

Jordan Stewart had an effort go over for Linfield before Yann-Erik de Lanlay blazed over at the other end.

The Blues threatened soon after, Chris Casement's teasing cross causing all sorts of problems in the Rosenborg defence.

Pål André Helland then curled a free-kick just wide as the Norwegians reached half-time with a 1-0 lead.

It was 2-0 on 51 minutes when Konradsen hooked the ball home from close range.

It should have been 3-0 in the 65th minute but Helland's free-kick off from 20 yards cannoned off the crossbar.

They didn't have long to wait as on 71 minutes Akintola headed home from close range after a defensive mistake.

Hellend completed the scoring with a simple tap in from a low cross from the right.

The defeat means Linfield wil now move into the Europa League where they will meet HB Torshavn in the second qualifying round.

The first tie will take place in the Faroe Islands on Tuesday, July 23.

Meanwhile, Linfield boss Healy has announced news of a loan move for Eamon Scannell.

“I want to advise our supporters that young Eamon Scannell will be joining Warrenpoint Town on a season long loan arrangement," he told the club''s website

"Eamon impressed during his loan spell there and both they and we were pleased with his progress and development there.

"This loan arrangement will be beneficial to Eamon, Warrenpoint and ourselves and we will continue to monitor his progress closely while he’s on loan.

"I want to wish him well during his loan period at a club he’s familiar with and highly regarded at and I know he will benefit immensely from the first team opportunities that will hopefully come his way at Warrenpoint.”
