Linfield linked with move for Maltese striker Kyrian Nwoko

Linfield are being linked with a bold summer move for Valletta forward Kyrian Nwoko.

Reports coming out of Malta claim the Blues have agreed an undisclosed fee for the Maltese international and have reached agreement on personal terms with the player.

According to the Times of Malta, a two year contract has been mooted, although the move is subject to the 24-year-old being awarded a work permit.

Nwoko, who has played 21 times for Malta, joined Valletta in 2017 and has won two league titles with the club in 2018 and 2019. He also lifted the FA Trophy in 2018.

The mobile frontman has scored three goals at international level and also bagged four goals in 11 appearances for Malta’s Under-21 squad.

Nwoko, who is keen on securing a move to full-time football, was linked with a transfer to Scunthorpe United, when they were a League One club, in 2019.

It was reported at the time that the versatile forward had scored in a behind closed doors friendly for Scunthorpe, but that both clubs failed to agree terms.

Nwoko didn’t feature in Malta's recent 3-0 friendly defeat to Northern Ireland in Austria, with his last cap coming as a substitute in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Croatia in March.

The last of his three international goals came in a 2-0 friendly win over Gibraltar at the Ta Qali Stadium in October, his country’s first win in 18 months.

His four year international career to date has seen him come up against Spain, Norway and Sweden in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

One Maltese source described Nwoko as a “proper target man who offers an aerial presence, can hold the ball up and also link up play”.

“He is very versatile, can play in a front two, drop deep or play in wide areas,” he added.

Linfield boss David Healy is keen to add additional firepower to his squad after losing both Shayne Lavery and Andy Waterworth at the end of last season.

Lavery, who recently joined Championship new boys Blackpool, and Waterworth, who was snapped up by Glenavon, scored 48 goals in all competitions between them last season.

The Blues are currently in Lithuania preparing for the first leg of a Champions League first qualifying round clash with FK Zalgiris on Tuesday night.
