Linfield legends praise Jamie Mulgrew with comical tweets

Jamie Mulgrew will add to his legendary status this weekend when he steps out for Linfield this weekend.

The 35-year-old midfielder will make his 639th appearance for the Blues on Saturday when they host Coleraine at Windsor Park.

Mulgrew will draw level with another Linfield legend if he plays, with his 639 appearances putting him level with former defender William 'Winkie' Murphy.

Ironically, Murphy will be in the opposing dugout as assistant manager of Coleraine.

Top of Linfield's appearance list is the one and only Noel Bailie MBE, who played a remarkable 1013 times for his one and only club.

Both Bailie and Murphy were first to offer their congratulations to Mulgrew ahead of his latest landmark - with a bit of banter thrown in for good measure.

Murphy praised Mulgrew on his longevity, and jokingly predicted there is plenty more to come.

Winkie said: "Some achievement @mulgrew22 and plenty of games left in them wee legs."

Mulgrew is one of the first names down on manager Healy's team sheet, but as any Linfield player will tell you, nobody is assured of their place in the team.

And legendary former captain Bailie used some familiar Blues rhetoric when he joked: "Outstanding Jamie.....if selected!!"

Another Linfield captain, Michael Gault, described Winkie and Mulgrew as "2 legends and top men", while one fan asked: "Can JM beat the LEGEND @noel_bailie, 2 legends from our brilliant club, thanks men for the great times AFJ."

Mulgrew has won an incredible nine league titles and seven Irish Cups during his time at Linfield, including seven doubles.

The midfielder admitted recently he may go into coaching when he retires, but he has no plans to hang up the boots just yet.
