Linfield facing possibility of another high profile Champions League date with all-conquering Celtic

Linfield are facing the possibility or another high profile European date with triple treble winners Celtic when the draw is made for the UEFA Champions League on June 18.

The Blues, who won the Danske Bank Premiership last month, have been confirmed as one of the unseeded teams for the first qualifying round in July.

And that means Scottish champions Celtic, who are top seeds due to a superior coefficient, could be the South Belfast club’s opposition.

The Glasgow giants beat Linfield 6-0 on aggregate in the second qualifying round of the Champions League the last time the clubs met in Europe in 2017.

Scott Sinclair and Tom Rogic scored in a 2-0 win at Windsor Park, with Celtic cruising to a 4-0 win in the return leg at Celtic Park five days later.

It was the first time Linfield had faced UK opposition in Europe since 1970 when the Big Two giants lost on away goals to Manchester City in the European Cup Winners Cup.

As well as Celtic, possible first round opponents include Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade, AIK of Sweden, Rosenborg (Norway) and League of Ireland champions Dundalk.

Other seeded clubs include BATE Borisov, Astana, Ludogorets, Qarabag, Maribor, Sheriff Tiraspol, HJK of Finland, F91 Dudelange, Shkendija, TNS (Wales) and Slovan Bratislava.

First leg games take place on July 9/10, with the second leg scheduled for July 16/17.

First qualifying round losers proceed to the second qualifying round of the Europa League.
