Linfield clash is just the tonic for Dundalk says Vinny Perth

Vinny Perth says a two-legged clash with Irish League kingpins Linfield is just the tonic to raise Dundalk’s spirits.

The Lilywhites had their treble dreams dashed in Sunday’s FAI Cup final when they lost a penalty shootout to Shamrock Rovers.

But the league champions were back on the training ground yesterday, preparing for Friday’s first leg of the new Unite the Union Cup at Windsor Park.

Perth said: “If we had won on Sunday we would be treating these two games with the utmost respect as well. I know the All-Island League got a setback last week but hopefully it’s a good game and a good occasion.

“On the pitch I think we’ve made strides in Irish football and the League of Ireland and now we’re preparing for what’s potentially another big weekend.”

Meanwhile, Perth has hailed Michael Duffy (above) for playing through the pain barrier this year.

The Dundalk ace was subdued in the final until scoring a stunning equaliser late in injury time.

“Michael had some difficulties earlier in the season,” said Perth. “We hid them - he had a huge amount of problems with a groin issue – but over the last couple of months he’s been outstanding.”
