Linfield boss David Healy wants 'Unite the Union Cup' to be a one-off game

Linfield boss David Healy says the ‘Unite the Union Cup’ should be a one-off game.

He is disappointed that the new competition involving the respective champions on both sides of the border will impact on his league schedule.

And for that reason, the Blues boss intends rotating his squad in Friday’s first-leg at Windsor Park.

Linfield are fourth in the Irish League, five points behind early leaders Coleraine but with two games in hand.

Their game against Dungannon is off on Saturday as they host Dundalk the night before.

And Healy bemoaned not being able to shoehorn a league game in next Tuesday as the second-leg at Oriel Park is on Monday.

"The federations have decided that they want it over two legs, which is surprising," Healy told BBC.

"Personally I think it should be over one game. The Friday and Monday creates a bit of an issue so there will be numerous changes (to the team).

"We can't keep going on playing the same players week in, week out, so we'll need to change it.”

Healy claims it will be an “enormous task” to topple Dundalk over two legs but said: "Hopefully whatever team we put out on Friday will do the club proud.”
