Linfield boss David Healy says disillusioned players should take heart from Shayne Lavery example

David Healy believes Shayne Lavery’s blistering form in blue is proof the Irish League is a perfect platform for young players to revive their hopes of a cross channel career.

Lavery, who bagged a double in Tuesday’s Irish Cup semi-final win over Ballymena United, has set Windsor Park alight since returning home from Everton in 2019.

And after a prolific return of 46 goals in only 74 Linfield appearances, the 22-year-old is poised for a return to full-time football in England ahead of next season.

A host of clubs have been eyeing up a move, although League One Blackpool are understood to be leading the race for Lavery’s signature when his contract expires in the summer. The Northern Ireland striker has scored 29 goals in all competitions this season.

“It’s well documented we are going to lose Shayne and I’ll be sad to see him go,” said Healy.

“But the plus point for me is that any young players who are disillusioned or disheartened after being released (in England or Scotland) can come back to the Irish League.

“I’ve been saying for a number of years the Irish League has improved and it’s an opportunity for any young players to come back here and play.

“He is full of confidence and is in terrific form. We will shake hands come the end of the season and wish him well and look to see how well he does.”
