Linfield boss David Healy labels Boxing Day celebrations 'distasteful'

Linfield boss David Healy has hit out at Glentoran's Boxing Day celebrations - branding them "distasteful".

There was plenty of festive cheer around the Oval after the Glens eased to an impressive 3-0 win over the Blues.

It was a significant Big Two success for Mick McDermott, who was later captured on video making a passionate speech to supporters which ended up being shared by fans across social media.

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster's Sportsound on Saturday, Healy said: "The celebrations, or over celebrations that happened on Boxing Day were distasteful, but that happens.

"We are Linfield, and during my time here, and I know from before I arrived, Linfield have always been humble in victory. People might suggest otherwise.

"But we have also been gracious in defeat. Maybe some other clubs need to take a look at themselves.

"Of course it is an opportunity to celebrate when they beat Linfield, but don't try to rub salt in the wounds.

"Some of the things that have happened from then have been distasteful, playing it out in the media and social media.

"It is something that we didn't have any issues over, because we were number one and top of the league, and we had worked hard to get in the position we were in."

Healy praised his players for the way they responded to the Christmas malaise.

He added: "On Boxing Day we suffered badly. When you lose to your biggest rivals, your bitter rivals, it hurts. Again, (it came) on the back of a decent run in the league.

"You go to play Glentoran and lose 3-0, and again there are a lot of questions to be asked.

"So the way we responded, me as manager and the players and staff, we regrouped and regathered our thoughts.

"We made sure we wouldn't have a repeat of the season we had two years ago when come the end of the season we looked tired and jaded.

"We lost players to suspensions and injuries which finished our season off."
