Linfield boss David Healy hoping Blues find festive tonic following Big Two defeat

David Healy hopes Linfield can find a festive tonic when they return to Premiership action in just two days' time.

The champions crashed to a 3-0 defeat in Boxing Day's Big Two derby at the Oval.

Elvio van Overbeek's cheeky opener and two goals from Hrvoje Plum sealed a big win for Glentoran in East Belfast.

The defeat saw the Blues knocked off the top of the Danske Bank Premiership, with new leaders Cliftonville - who beat Crusaders - now holding a one-point advantage at the summit.

Next up for Healy's Blues is another big test when they travel to Coleraine - a team who have beaten Linfield three times already this season.

"I'm disappointed. I don't think the scoreline reflects how we played," Healy said after today's derby defeat.

"I thought we created numerous chances and we just didn't take them."

The Blues boss added: "I'm not disappointed with the level of performance, just that we didn't get the goals at the right time.

"The good thing is we have a chance to bounce back, and that comes quickly against Coleraine on Saturday."

Meanwhile, Glentoran boss Mick McDermott insisted the Big Two derby was "just another game" for his players.

Over 6,500 supporters attended the festive showdown at the Oval, in one of the most eagerly anticipated games between the sides in recent times.

"We prepare for every game the same way, and I've said that since the start of the season. It was just another game for us, but it was an occasion for the fans," McDermott said.

"We knew that the players would handle it well and credit to them. It's all down to the belief and it has been building. We wanted to be competitive, and that was our only target.

"We want to make teams worry about playing Glentoran, like they would have in the past.

"It doesn't matter who you are playing, you go out there and leave your shirt on the pitch."
