Linfield boss David Healy adds former West Ham United defender to his backroom staff

Linfield boss David Healy has confirmed the addition of former international teammate George McCartney to his backroom staff at Windsor Park.

McCartney, who won 34 caps for Northern Ireland, played more than 350 games in English football with West Ham United, Sunderland and Leeds United.

Healy believes the 40-year-old, who returned home after leaving West Ham United seven years ago, will bring a “wealth of experience” to the Blues set-up.

He said: “I’m pleased to be able to advise our supporters that George McCartney has joined our coaching and backroom staff.

“George has been with us for several weeks now and he’s fitted in well and made a positive contribution behind the scenes and on the training pitch.

“He has a wealth of experience from his playing days with Sunderland and West Ham as well as the senior international squad.

“I’d like to welcome him as a new coach to the first team squad and I look forward to continuing to work with him as we aim to bring further success to the club.”

McCartney made his Northern Ireland debut alongside Healy in a 3-0 win over Iceland in a World Cup qualifier at Windsor Park in 2001.

Healy was on the scoresheet that night as was McCartney who scored his first and only goal for his country.

His last cap came in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Albania in Tirana in 2010.
