Linen and bedding retailer Julian Charles to open 30 stores, create jobs and rebrand

A national linen and bedding retailer has announced plans to open up to 30 stores, creating new jobs.

Julian Charles, which was founded in 1947 and headquartered in Manchester, currently operates from 75 locations and the expansion over the next 18 months could see that number rise to over 100. The retailer has also rebranded to Julian Charles Home.

In a statement, the company said it "believes there is still a significant appetite for high-quality physical retail".

The move comes after documents published in September last year revealed the company had achieved a turnover of £4.2m and pre-tax losses of £126.380 for the six months to the end of April 2021.

London-based SKG Capital completed its acquisition of the business in June 2020 ahead of it reporting a revenue of £30.7m and a pre-tax loss of £2.7m for the 18 months to the end of October that year.

Simon Peck, managing director at Julian Charles, said: "Following an excellent 18 months for the business, and having already revamped our online offering and extended our product range, we are now moving into the growth stage of our strategy.

"This involves increasing the number of Julian Charles locations across the country and using the successes of the past year as a springboard for the next."

Neil Taylor, partner at SKG Capital, added: "When we bought Julian Charles, the business had the solid foundation of a respected high-end brand with a strong customer base.

"We saw the opportunity to build on the brand’s leadership in bedding and linen to create a distinctive player in the wider homewares sector."
