Linebackers coach Matt House explains why he chose to join Chiefs

If you’ll recall, landing new linebackers coach Matt House was a bit of a song and dance for the Kansas City Chiefs organization.

At first, House was reported to be leaving his job as defensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky to join the Chiefs as linebackers coach. Then, abruptly, Kentucky refused to negotiate House’s buyout on his contract. Eventually, they got the deal done, and now House is happily with the Chiefs.

So what made this opportunity with the Chiefs so appealing for House? He’s left behind a more prominent position, albeit at the college football level, to become a position coach with the Chiefs. When reporters questioned what brought him to Kansas City, House was quite honest.

“Well you’re working for an unbelievable organization, a Hall of Fame head coach, the opportunity to work with a defensive coordinator that you’re familiar with and you believe in,” House said following OTAs. “And then obviously the opportunity to win a championship. It’s huge.”

Another bid for Andy Reid as a Hall of Famer from an assistant coach, and one that hasn’t worked with Reid in the past. He respects what Reid is capable of a head coach.

House obviously has strong allegiances to his new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo as they previously worked together. House was the defensive quality control coach and assistant linebackers coach during three seasons when Spagnuolo was head coach of the Rams.

Each coach seems locked in, from the head coach all the way down to the quality control coaches. Everyone knows how close the Chiefs came to a championship appearance in 2018, and House knows this team will continue to compete for and pursue a Super Bowl victory. Winning a Super Bowl is the ultimate achievement for a football coach, so that had to make this decision very easy for him.
