Line of Duty won't end on a cliffhanger, says writer Jed Mercurio

Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio has revealed that he won’t end the show on a cliffhanger.

The new series, famous for its plot twists and dramatic reveals, is back from Sunday, and Mercurio has spoken of what he believes are the secrets to the its success.

He also said that when the show does end, fans will know because they'll have all their questions answered.

Speaking at a Q&A in Belfast he said: “Before we started series three we knew we had a series four. So it’s been commissioned one ahead ever since. So we were able to approach four knowing it wasn’t the last, and we were to able to approach five knowing that it wasn’t the last.

“It’ll be interesting to see what happens when five goes out because then we’ll be able to have that conversation again with the BBC and if they support the series with a commission of series seven then we know that six isn’t the last. If they don’t then six will have to be the last.”

Asked if he would end on a cliffhanger so that there’d be another commission, Mercurio said that he wouldn’t.

At a special Belfast preview screening of the first episode of series 5 of Line Of Duty, filmed in Northern Ireland, William Crawley talks to the series writer and creator Jed Mercurio (Presseye)

He said: “It wouldn’t be worth the risk because if we did it and then didn’t get the commission then it leaves everything hanging and people who have invested so much time and loyalty to the series wouldn’t get the pay off that we feel that we owe them.”

The show’s success, he said, is down to that relationship with the viewers.

He said: “Over three seasons on BBC Two the series did grow and when it transferred it brought a loyal audience with it and also was lucky enough to attract a new audience. This position we’re in is really down to viewer loyalty and we’re very grateful for that.”

And, there’s also Belfast.

“It’s worked out very well for us, it’s a great place to shoot and we’ve had amazing hospitality here,” Mercurio said.

“There’s a lot of talent here that have come part of the show. We’re really happy with this very productive relationship we have with Belfast and Northern Ireland in general.”
