Line of Duty villain explains how character's evil stare involves her dinner

Line of Duty star Anna Maxwell Martin has revealed the secret behind her character’s evil stare is thinking about what she’ll have for dinner.

Anna, who plays DCS Patricia Carmichael on the hit BBC1 show, made a dramatic return to series six when she swept in to take over AC-12 from under the nose of Ted Hastings last week.

And she revealed how much she loves playing the chilling character that fans of the show love to hate.

Maxwell faces off against her on-screen enemy Adrian Dunbar, who plays Ted Hasting on the show (BBC/World Productions/Chris Barr)

She said: “I love it. Absolutely love it. You could just do anything and it would be OK within the realms of Patricia Carmichael.”

But Anna, 43, said she wasn’t quite sure what to do when asked to perform a stare so she simply thought about what she was having for her tea.

Anna, who made the comments on the Obsessed With… Line of Duty podcast, said: “I know I was asked to stare a lot and I really didn’t have any clue what I was doing, so I just would think about what I was going to have for dinner and things like that.”

Fans have been waiting all week to find out if DI Kate Fleming, played by Vicky McClure, survives after she and crooked PC Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper) were involved in an armed stand-off at the end of episode five last Sunday.

And as the hunt for bent coppers heats up, fans are worried one of the main trio of AC-12 officers – DI Fleming, DS Steve Arnott played by Martin Compston or Superintendent Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) – will be killed off.
