Line of Duty viewers think they’ve guessed the identity of a mysterious male voice found in an audio recording on Gail Vella’s phone.

*Major spoilers for Line of Duty series six episode two below*

During Sunday (28 March) night’s episode of the crime drama, AC-12 continued their investigation into Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) and her potential involvement in the death of journalist Gail (Andi Osho).

It was revealed that Gail had a history of reporting on police corruption and was working on a podcast series about the topic using unbroadcastable material.

After seizing her computers, AC-12 discovered that they appeared to have been wiped, all apart from one corrupted audio file.

“[Jimmy] Savile lied to cover them up,” Vella could be heard saying. “Some police officers not only accepted those lies, they propagated them. We’re losing our power to challenge lies.”

A male voice then responded: “There’s some people you can’t challenge.”

While the man’s identity is never revealed, a number of viewers have speculated that the voice is that of Jimmy Lakewell (Patrick Baladi), a lawyer from series four who defended both Roz Huntley (Thandie Newton) and her husband.

Jimmy Lakewell appeared in the fourth series of Line of Duty (BBC)

Lakewell was revealed to have been one of the attackers collectively nicknamed “the Balaclava Man” and involved with the organised crime group, and was later imprisoned after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice.

“Jimmy Lakewell was *for sure* the voice on that recording,” one Twitter user theorised.

Another tweet read: “Was Gail Vella interviewing Jimmy Lakewell in prison and that’s the voice on her computer?”

“The podcast voice was 100% Jimmy Lakewell. I know Neil from The Office’s voice when I hear it!” one commenter wrote.

“The male voice on the recording from Gails laptop sounded like Roz Huntley’s lawyer Jimmy Lakewell from series 4. Was he providing information to Gail about the OCG?” another Twitter user said.

“I think the male voice on Gail’s recording is Roz Huntley’s solicitor,” one tweet read

Line of Duty airs Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
