Line of Duty tops the polls as the Best TV Drama of 2021

2021 was truly the year of film and TV in Northern Ireland - from major blockbusters setting up production here to local TV dramas smashing records.

One of the biggest success stories of the year was undoubtedly Line of Duty which thrust the streets of Belfast onto the screens of 12.8 million people on its season 6 finale.

Fermanagh born actor Adrian Dunbar's portrayal of the gaffer, Superintendent Ted Hastings, alongside his co-stars Vicky McClure, who plays DI Kate Fleming and Martin Compston, DI Steve Arnott, capitated audiences as they uncovered the identity of H in the hit police drama.

With Line of Duty's season 6 finale the most-watched drama in the UK since records began, it was therefore voted the Royal Television Society's 'TV Drama of the Year' by the public.

Knocking out Channel 4 hit It's A Sin and Netflix record-breaker Squid Game, it came down to our favourite coppers and popular show Succession, with LoD eventually taking the top spot.

The RTS took to Twitter to announce the news. Their post read: "Well like Ted Hastings himself, there's clearly only one thing you're interested in… and that's bent coppers, because the polls saw unit AC-12 beat the Roy family hands down!

"That's right, the TV Drama of 2021 you voted for was... #LineOfDuty!"

Earlier this year, the show won a special recognition award at the National Television Awards after 10 years of filming as well as scooping best-returning drama.

Adrian Dunbar also revealed that he's "sure" the BBC will want another series of the hit drama, despite writer Jed Mercurio having no plans set in stone.

The 63-year-old has shed some light on the show’s return, reassuring fans that he’s "sure" he’ll be back on screens with Ted Hastings' famous "mother of god" and "bent coppers" catchphrases.

“I'm sure the BBC want to do another series. We do, because we want to get together again,” he told GQ Magazine.

"I have a couple of ideas. We all have ideas that we share – but I'd rather not say what they are. There are things embedded in the storyline that could come together to make up a very interesting series seven."
