Line of Duty to return to BBC One as series 6 premiere date confirmed

The premiere date for series six of BBC police drama Line of Duty has been confirmed.

A teaser trailer for the first episode of the next season has confirmed the show will return to BBC One on March 21.

The trailer aired during the half-time break in the Wales v England Six Nations game, being broadcast on BBC One this afternoon (February 27).

The first trailer for the new series featured Vicky McClure, Steve Arnott and Adrian Dunbar making their return to the series, with Kelly McDonald guest as the officer under suspicion this time around.

This was promptly followed by a tweet from the channel's official account, saying: "CONFIRMED: The new series of Line of Duty starts Sunday 21 March on BBC One and BBC iPlayer."

The highly-anticipated new series of the drama was originally set to air in 2020, with it being confirmed in February of that year that production on season six had begun.

However, the onset of the coronavirus lockdown meant production was halted and the release date was delayed into 2021, with the final arrival date now confirmed.

The first series of Line of Duty premiered on BBC Two in June 2012, and it quickly became the best-performing drama for the broadcasting giant in a decade.

The tense drama, created by Jed Mercurio, is about an anti-corruption police squad and it's now been two years since series five, which peeled back more secrets about mysterious H and the OCG.

Unlike series two to five, season six will have seven episodes full of AC-12 action and Mercurio has said he'd love to carry on past this new season.
