Line of Duty: The Dot Cottan Morse code revelations EXPLAINED

Line of Duty has reached its dramatic conclusion in series five.

But the big reveal of who H may be and how they are the link between the police and organised crime has failed to materialise.

What has been revealed though is that H is not one person and in the death throes of former corrupt officer Detective Inspector Matthew 'Dot' Cottan, there were possibly four people that formed the mysterious H.

DS Steve Arnott of AC-12 spotted a vital clue in a video image of Cottan laying bloodied and wounded on the floor, as DI Kate Fleming helped him try and reveal who H is.

Cottan had been found to the the 'caddy' who acted as an in between serious crime gangs and the police and he tapped out a clue in morse code with his fingers.

It was this that caught Arnott's eye and has opened up the possibility of a blockbuster sixth instalment of BBC's popular crime drama.

For much of the fifth series, it looked like AC-12's leader, Ted Hastings, could be the 'bent copper' who is known as H.

It turned out that he had been betrayed by his legal counsel, Gill Biggeloe and that there was not one H but actually four people that make up the 'top dog'.

Arnott revealed to Hastings and Fleming what he had seen (somewhat tenuously as it was a still frame) in the video of Cottan's death.

He said: "We’ve been reexamining Dot’s final moments – the frame it was frozen on in your interview made me spot something we all missed. Look at Dot’s left hand."

Hastings replies: "His fingers are tapping."

Arnott goes on to explain: “Dot was trying to tell us something before he lost consciousness. He couldn’t speak due to the gunshot wound to his chest. But he could move his hand."

Fleming confirms: "Tap, tap, tap, tap/tap, tap, tap, tap. It’s morse code, dot dot dot dot."

It turns out that H is not an initial but a clue as to who is involved.

Arnott continued: "The letter h in morse code is four dots. H is not an initial, it’s a clue. Four dots, four caddies, four police leads with organised crime."

Fleming reveals that three of the four have been nabbed: "Dot, Hilton, Gill plus one more. And they’re still out there."

So, who could the last piece of the jigsaw be? The finger of suspicion will begin to point again when the sixth series begins but the speculation will no doubt begin straight away.
