Line of Duty star on why no-nonsense character would make short work of Brexit

He is one of TV’s most loved characters thanks to his no-nonsense attitude – and Line of Duty’s Ted Hastings says he could solve Brexit in a heartbeat.

Actor Adrian Dunbar and the rest of the Line of Duty cast will be watched by up to eight million viewers on Sunday as the crime drama returns for series five.

Asked if Superintendent Hastings could tackle Britain’s current issues, Dunbar said: “He’d make short work of Brexit.

"He’d get a few of those guys across the table – Barnier and Tusk – and put them on a bit of interrogation.

"Then he’d pull out a few of those eccentrics, like Rees-Mogg and others, and give them an even bigger grilling.”

At 60, Dunbar says his life has changed thanks to the show, which has seen him nominated for a Bafta.

Speaking on the Series Linked TV podcast, he said: “It’s fabulous. You get to my age and infirmities and suddenly a nice part like this comes along and you have the wherewithal to go for it.

“There’s a Ted Hastings bingo thing that happens where, every time I say, ‘fella’, guys have to drink a pint or something.”

Keeping the secrets of the show is easy for Adrian as he says he simply refuses to tell friends and family anything, even ensuring his wife is kept in the dark about upcoming storylines.
