Martin Compston condemns abuse of England stars after Euro 2020 final defeat

Martin Compston has taken to Twitter to praise the England football team after their defeat last night against Italy for the Euro 2020 championship.

The tense game came down to nail-biting penalties with the sides locked at 1-1 after extra time.

Misses from young stars Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka ultimately meant Italy lifted the tropphy with the players shockingly becoming the subject of vile racial abuse online.

Although a proud Scotland supporter, Compston, 37, put the rivalry aside to show his support for the England team.

Taking to Twitter, the Line of Duty actor wrote: "Knives out from some who had them knighted yesterday. Southgate and his team carried themselves with class.

"He led with humility, Rashford & Sterling role models for youngsters football or other wise credit to their country. Those that boo and abuse them are what’s wrong with it.

During Italy's national anthem, England fans at Wembley boo'd throughout.

During the Euros, Scotland and England football teams both took the knee to signify that racism was not tolerated on the pitch.

Many people replied, thanking him for not making any snide remark as England fans woke up with the result still raw.

One replied: "Thanks for not jumping on the English hating bandwagon, Martin. Most of us are decent, it's just a shame about the rest."

"This is nice to see. I’m a huge Celtic and Scotland fan, however I live in England my husband and children are English. Once Scotland were out I wished England nothing but good luck. This is the first nice thing I have read from a Scot. It’s only a game after all," another wrote.

A third simply added: "Well said Martin. Well said."

The Sweet Sixteen star was recently seen in Edinburgh having a kick about with a five-aside game in Portobello last month.

Compston has a long love for game and used to be a professional footballer playing for Aberdeen FC as a young teenager and later going on to sign for his local team Greenock Morton FC.
