Line of Duty 'set to return' for Series 7 but new episodes 'are years away'

Line of Duty is reportedly set to return for a seventh series after a new deal was reached.

The hit BBC One crime drama has been the biggest scripted drama for the channel for the 21st century and has run for six series so far.

The show follows police department AC-12 as they seek to bring corrupt police officers to justice.

The drama stars Martin Compston as DI Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure as DI Kate Fleming and Adrian Dunbar as Superintendent Ted Hastings.

The sixth run ended with the lead trio discovering the identity of the police officer codenamed ‘H’ in a controversial resolution that drew 15million viewers.

Now it appears that the blockbuster series will be back for a seventh run - but there will reportedly be quite the wait.

A source told the Daily Star: “Another series is happening. This is the news millions of fans have been hoping for.”

They went on to add: “A lot of stuff still needs to be agreed and it is likely to take a while.

“Fans will probably have to wait a few years before it airs on TV.”

The BBC declined to comment when approached by The Mirror.

The previous series - which ran for its longest episode count yet at seven episodes - was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The guest lead character of the sixth series was Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald as DCI Joanne Davidson.

Previous guest leads include Lennie James, Keeley Hawes, Daniel Mays, Thandiwe Newton, and Stephen Graham.

It is unknown which cast members would return for the next series or who will guest star.

Ian Buckells was revealed as H in Line of Duty series 6 (BBC)

The previous run revealed that Ian Buckells was actually 'H' but it is unknown whether he will return to the show if it comes back.

The series was created by writer Jed Mercurio who has overseen all previous series and has also had hit shows with the likes of Bodyguard and Bloodlands.

*Line of Duty series 1 to 6 are available now on BBC iPlayer.
