Line of Duty series 7 - will it happen or not? Fans desperate for more after final episode

Before series 6 had even finished fans of Line of Duty were crying out for more and desperate to know if there will be another series and creator Jed Mercurio has said he "hoped" there could be.

The hit BBC drama has now been enthralling viewers since 2012 and, after a two year break since a dramatic series 5 which saw the death of much-loved character John Corbett, series 6 was the most anticipated yet.

And, while its first episode received criticism for being too slow and too full of jargon - anyone remember CHIS?! - it has been delivering goods from episode 2 on wards.

Two back to back cliffhangers in episodes 4 and 5 left everyone on tenterhooks, while the penultimate episode 6 brought the death of dodgy child criminal turned questionable cop Ryan Pilkington, which saw Kate Fleming and Jo Davidson taken into custody.

And, as the finale trailer said 'everything led up' to what was to come on Sunday, with a firm hint that the mysterious H would finally be unmasked.

Bookies had Patricia Carmichael and Chief Con. Phillip Osborne pretty much neck and neck going into the finale but before the culprit was finally exposed, viewers were desperate to know if there'd be another series.

Will there be Line of Duty series 7?

So far the BBC are staying tight-lipped on the prospect of if there's more to come.

Creator Jed Mercurio told Radio Times said: "We’re in a situation where it’s not entirely clear that there will be a seventh series.”

Line of Duty viewers panic stricken by BBC announcer's introduction (BBC)

“We would hope there could be. But we’re having to do our planning coming out of Covid, and a whole bunch of other things around the idea that these things aren’t guaranteed at all now.”

Within minutes of episode 7 starting, one fan tweeted: "I’m really hoping that they will announce series 7 after the finale... and that no one we love dies tonight!"

A second reacted; "I’m really hoping that they will announce series 7 after the finale... and that no one we love dies tonight!" and a more pesamistic third fan tweeted: "Looking at @martin_compston @jed_mercurio and @Vicky_McClure tweets it looks like there won't be a series 7.

"I for one will be glad having watched it regularly since it's inception and would like the main storyline wrapped up on a high note"
