Line of Duty's Vicky McClure shares emotional phone call with D-Day hero grandad and everyone thinks he's a legend

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings when 156,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy as part of the first invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe, aiming to bring an end to World War Two.

Among them was Vicky McClure's grandad Ralph.

Ahead of the landmark anniversary, the Line of Duty actress shared an emotional telephone call with the 94-year-old D-Day veteran, who Vicky rightly calls a "hero".

Posting three snippets of their chat to her 243,000 followers on Instagram (watch video below), the 36-year-old also wrote a short message celebrating her grandad's bravery.

She said: "Called my grandad earlier, 94, D-Day veteran in the navy.

"Was on the landing craft helping put soldiers on the beach while under murderous fire.

"I said ‘How you feeling about tomorrow’?... Words can’t describe. #hero"

Grandad McClure, who is a Notts County season ticket holder of more than 80 years and regularly attends matches with his famous granddaughter, batted off Wollaton-born Vicky's praise saying down the phone: "No, we had a job to do and went in and did it."

"Legend, you're a legend, love ya," replied Vicky, who now lives in Toton with her fiance, the filmmaker and Nottingham Forest director Jonny Owen.

Since being posted online yesterday (June 5) it has been 'loved' more than 24,000 times with many celebrities and fans posting their thanks and admiration of "legend" Ralph.

TV presenter and fan Davina McCall commented: "We must NEVER forget," and comedian John Bishop said "Wonderful generation we owe so much to."

Presenter Dermot O'Leary added: "Built from mighty stuff," while make-up artist to the stars Justine Jenkins said: "God bless him, what a total legend. We have no idea what all of them went through."
